Car brakes work by applying pressure to the wheels of the car, which slows down or completely stops the vehicle. When a driver steps on the brake pedal, the force is transferred to a lever system that amplifies it, sending it to the master cylinder. The master cylinder is filled with brake fluid, and this force increases the pressure of this fluid. The pressurized brake fluid travels through brake lines. For disc brakes, the fluid reaches the brake calipers at each wheel and pushes against pistons, which press the brake pads against the brake rotors (also known as discs) attached to the wheels. In drum brakes, hydraulic pressure pushes brake shoes against the inside of a drum that rotates with the wheel.
The friction created between the brake pads and rotors, or the brake shoes and drum surface, slows down the rotation of the wheels, reducing the car's speed and allowing the driver to bring it to a complete stop.
An emergency brake, also known as a parking brake, serves as a backup system and is used to keep the car stationary when parked. It operates independently of the main braking system.
